ABSTRACT:
- Mentoring occurs when a more knowledgeable and accomplished individual gains the ability to positively influence another.
- Mentoring is teaching in and through a relationship.
- Mentoring can be made a formal process when an individual is given a title or assigned the role.
- Most mentoring, however, is an informal process that occurs when one individual (a mentor) finds another (a protege) they wish to invest in.
- Mentoring within organizations is analogous to the life-giving blood in an organism; without a great mentoring program, the organization's "quality of life" will be severely compromised. While an organization may be able to "survive" without a formal mentoring program; to "thrive" there must be an effective mentoring program for all levels.
- Mentoring develops the fire service, two at a time.
